The first known Moore in our Australian family is Robert Moore, believed to have been born in Armagh, Ireland on 19 October 1844. His parents were David Moore and Mary White. Robert was married in England, at Manchester Cathedral to Mary Jane Rhodes on 14 July 1869. They had three children in England and then sailed to New Zealand where another son was born. They came on to Australia, arriving at Geelong on The City of Edinburgh in 1876.
It was in Geelong that the Moores met the Gavins and children of the two families married.
John Christopher Moore, born about 1882 was married in 1904 to Louisa May Gavin.
Our earliest Moore photograph is a picture of Louisa May taken as a young woman. We believe that John Christopher was a railways worker and that Louisa May worked in the railways canteen.
The family moved to Melbourne at about the turn of the century and after a few changes of address and job the family lived in Lithgow St, Abbotsford, next door to the Schweppe's Aerated Waters factory where he worked. He lost one eye caused by an exploding bottle but was kept on at work in a supervisory position, until, as he was getting on in years, a similar accident led to the loss of sight in the other eye.
His first child was John Viccars Moore, born 5 December 1904. He married Rita Patricia (Pat) Neenan on 14 April 1928. They had three children, Patricia, Maureen and John Gavin. return to HOME
